The Supermarine Spitfire is one of Britain's best known aircraft. It was designed by RJ Mitchell and it was a formidable attacking weapon in the war. Aviation fans have dug deep and worked hard to keep the Spitfire going. Out of over 20,000 built, around 50 airworthy examples are left today. Many people would agree that the Spitfire epitomises the bravery of all those who fought for freedom. And there are now opportunities to see this wonderful aircraft close up - you don't even have to leave the ground! Spitfire Factory Tour Biggin Hill for £49.00 Take a tour of the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar as seen on TV's 'Inside the Spitfire Factory', with Spitfire restoration projects at different stages. There are airworthy aircraft, usually Spitfire, Hurricane, Harvard, Cub; currently there are 14 Spitfires, 3 Hurricanes, Messerschmitt 109, Harvard and Cub aircraft to see. You can see the skilled engineerings using traditional techniques and tools to do the restoring, and tours are led by guides who will explain the history of each aircrafti. You can take photos of most aircraft - and there's a collection of vintage cars and motorcycles also on show. You're part of a small group - generally 10 people per guide - and you need to allow about an hour and a half for the experience. | |

The Ultimate Spitfire Simulator, Goodwood Aerodrome, West Sussex Wow, this is a Simulator session in a Spitfire MkIX simulator - it's the only Spitfire sim that can be used for training new Spitfire pilots! There's a 15 minute briefing and introduction to the controls and a 30 minute session in the simulator with about 20 minutes "airbourne". You need to allow about an hour on site for this expereince and a guest can accompany you in the simulator.
